In 2020, during the 2nd year of study in the IB Diploma program, I had an opportunity to present my Theory of Knowledge (TOK) presentation entitled “Intuition and emotions as  main drivers of panic” in the front of my class and TOK teacher. I prepared and presented the presentation myself, but it is possible in groups of up to 3 people. Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, this time the presentation was held online, but despite this fact, it was carried out efficiently, and some interesting questions from the audience were answered.

As the real-life example, I noticed that the mass media influences the human reason through playing on emotions and using intuitive human behavior, as in an episode of the American radio drama called The War of the Worlds. The episode became famous causing panic among its listening audience, because it described an alien invasion which, however, it was only an adaptation of the book. Basing on this, I created a knowledge question “To what extent does the intuition affect reason and guide our thoughts and actions?”.

Then, in the presentation, I focused on areas of knowledge such as human sciences or natural sciences. In the field of natural sciences, I presented that fear is the most strongly felt emotion that can control any human behavior. On the other hand, in other cases, emotions do not interfere reason and are a crucial part of it. Then, when analyzing human behavior in human sciences, I noticed that the subconscious interpretation that people put on information makes them behave like others, but there are also people who consciously choose to be different from the group.

Creating this presentation was really interesting for me and allowed me to explore the subject of human reason, subconscious behavior and look at this issue from different perspectives and time frames.
